Conflict Research


   International Work

ICR staff are also involved in a variety of forms of research, training and advisory work outside of Northern Ireland. We currently have a number of projects with international partners in development, while our current and previous international work includes the following:

ODIHR/OSCE: Neil Jarman chairs the international panel on freedom of assembly at the Office of Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, part of the Organisation of Security and Co-operation in Europe. They recently produced a set of guidelines on freedom of assembly legislation, available in English and Russian at www.osce.org/odihr/item_11_23835.html

The work with ODIHR has also included reviewing freedom of assembly legislation in a number of countries including: Armenia, Azerbaijan and Moldova. http://www.legislationline.org.../final.pdf

Insight on Conflict: ICR is preparing the Northern Ireland section of background materials and case studies for this multi-national project on conflict intervention and peacebuilding projects and activities. http://www.insightonconflict.org/

Football and Interculturalism: Neil Jarman and Robin Wilson were commissioned by the Football Intercultural Advisory Group on behalf of the Football Association of Ireland to develop a strategic plan for the FAI to promote interculturalism and integration through football. This was launched in May 2007 www.fai.ie

Human Rights and Conflict Transformation Project: This project has involved conferences, training and networking has been running since November 2002 (Further details). The current activities include a human rights training course for community activitists, which is being delivered in partnership with the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission. www.nihrc.org

Northern Ireland Affairs Committee: Neil Jarman acted as an adviser to the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee for their inquiry into hate crime in Northern Ireland from February 2004 until January 2005. Project on Ethnic Relations: Between November 2004 and January 2005 ICR carried out a brief review for the Project on Ethnic Relations and their approach to reducing inter-ethnic tensions in Eastern Europe. http://www.per-usa.org

Conflict Resolution and Radio in Nepal: Neil Jarman delivered a training workshop on this theme for human rights activists and radio producers under the auspices of the British Council in Pokhara, Nepal in 2002.

Conflict Research in Ghana: ICR secured funding and provided advice and assistance for a research project into conflict in northern Ghana, which was carried out by staff at the Centre for Social Policy Studies at the University of Ghana.
